Preschool Turkey Crafts – See, Touch and Smell

Not only do I love fall crafts, but I LOVE turkey crafts. There are SO many different options available, and they’re so much fun since most of them start with a handprint, which kids love.

Here are three crafts that we did last year while reading a book about the five senses – a spice turkey to smell, a texture turkey to touch, and a colored turkey to see.

To make a spice turkey, simply trace a handprint onto a piece of brown construction paper and cut it out. Glue it onto another piece of paper and add feet, a beak and a wattle. Spread glue on one of the fingers and sprinkle with a fall spice – nutmeg, allspice, cinnamon and ground cloves are the ones I used. Repeat for each finger. Not only is this a yummy smelling project, but you can also make a game out of it. Open up one spice container and let your child(ren) sniff it and then try to identify which finger matches.

To make a texture turkey, start with a piece of green felt for your background grass. Next, trace and cut out a handprint from a piece of sandpaper. Add feathers to each finger and be creative with other craft supplies you have on hand – foam flowers, pipecleaner legs and beak, et cetera. Talk about the different textures and how they feel.

Finally, the easiest of all is a colored turkey. Just paint different colors onto your child’s hand to make this colorful handprint turkey. In this case, we stamped the wattle with a red thumbprint and drew the feet and beak with a sharpy.
