Okay, this may just be my favorite Christmas craft ever! I think it turned out SO cute (although the flesh-color isn’t showing up that great in this picture), and it really wasn’t difficult at all.
To make, I cut the basic shapes from potato halves – a circle for the heads, a triangle for the bodies, a short rectangle for the arms and a long rectangle for the legs, a manger, a swaddled baby Jesus, a star…and angel wings (which we never ended up using, even though they were the hardest to cut. Oops!)

I used white paint with a teeny bit of brown for the face, arms and legs and brown for the bodies. With older children, it might be fun to wipe off the stamps and use different colors, but with mine, it’s best to keep it simple.
Stamp the shapes together to make Joseph, Mary and Baby Jesus in the manger and add the star at the top.
Cute, huh?
As a side note, my girls are not really into “directed” projects. They lose interest fairly quickly and much prefer free art. I think that this would also make a fantastic free art project as well. Next time, I’ll cut various shapes from the potato halves and let them come up with their own pictures, similar to a Mighty Minds or pattern block set, which they both love.
