Question of the Day: To Battle or Not to Battle over Hair Accessories

hair-collage

You may have noticed from any of the dozens of pictures on here that my girls often look like mop heads. I really do brush their hair every morning as part of our morning routine, but with roughhousing, dress up and just being kids in general, it doesn’t take it very long to start looking scraggly.

So far, I’ve not considered hair accessories a battle worth fighting on a daily basis (we do most of the time do their hair before we head into church, the doctor’s office or other outings), but most of the time I don’t even try at home because I know it will only be a matter of minutes before they pull them out.

For those of you who do your girls’ hair every day, do they just leave it alone naturally, or is it a rule in your home that you have to enforce?

  1. Mandi,
I have five kids, three are girls. I have decided to pick my fights and hair accessories are not among them! I pick disrespect, disobedience, and safety issues instead. My first girl(who was also the first child) always looked like she walked out of a magazine! The rest of my kids get to begin picking their own clothes early in life, which makes for interesting outfits to say the least. My husband and I have concluded (in our opinion) that forcing hair accessories especially at home, doesn’t make God smile…we try to focus on heart issues.

  2. My eldest (5.5 years old) is a girl. She is required to brush her hair each morning, and then she has to pick some way to keep her hair out of her face. We can do pig-tails, headbands, clips, etc. The main thing is that she gets to choose. All my husband and I care about is that her hair is out of her face. That being said, I only do her hair twice a day. Once when she first gets up, and once after rest time. So, many times we get half-way through the morning and her hair is a crazy mess from hours of dress-up play. Oh, well. She’s only a kid for a short time, and since she’s not too worried about it, I don’t worry about it. :-)

  3. My children are always perfectly groomed with every hair in place. That just happens naturally in THE LAND OF CURLY HAIR. :)

  4. And here I thought I was the only one with “mop head” little girls :)

Before I had children, I swore my kids’ hair would always be in place and brushed and pretty.

Notice I said BEFORE I had kids. Lol.

  5. Lilli (5 1/2) has ALWAYS loved getting her hair done. She’s at the point where she will coordinate her hair accessories to what she is wearing!

Corinne (2 1/2) is turning out to be the same way…she’ll even ask, “A-so pretty?!” (Meaning, “Am I so pretty?”)

  6. I have two little girls ages 2 1/2 and 18 months. My 18 month hold has hair that never needs brushing yet. My two year old is usually a mop head. It such a struggle to get her hair brushed with the pretty hair accessories. She wears her hair accessories to church and to the Dr’s office, places like that. She adores them especially “doggy hairbows” that match the same doggy dress but not enough to wear them regularly :)

  7. i try to do my kids’ hair each day. it feels like a hopeless cause. my 4-yr-old just takes everything out at nap time, if she waits that long. i wish i could make her understand that i probably would be less impatient with her if her hair wasn’t annoying me so much. my older daughter seems to have thinning hair (another stress for me) so i let her wear a headband to keep it back but it looks so scraggly by the end of the day. arg. i just want them to look cute!

  8. I try my best and I love barrettes and cute ponytail holders. My girls like the idea but will never leave them in for very long. So for now it’s a work in progress. Gillian goes to kindergarten next year so I think I’ll have to set some ground rules then.

  9. Your girls are so adorable! I think the mophead look makes them even sweeter looking. ;o)

I have three boys, ages 7, 5 and 2.5 - and my baby girl is only 10 months and still needs a bit more hair before I need to put much thought into what to do with it.

After having three boys, I thought I might really be into doing up my Girly Pie’s hair, but in reality, just getting it up into the little whalespout that I can manage seems to be a big enough struggle that I can tell she’ll be pretty well mopheaded herself.

But I was happy to see the question put out there, and enjoyed reading others’ responses. It’s nice to see I won’t be alone if I can’t manage to hold my girl down long enough to get her hair all cute and pretty.

  10. If we are staying home I typically do what my daughter calls a “little tail” It is just a half pony tail. Pulling up the part around her face so it won’t be in her eyes. She is getting where she wants to wear it down more often but it is so long and gets in her face and drives me crazy lol. I haven’t found any barretts or anything that hold it up. The grown up ones are to big and the little girl ones are to little *sigh!

  11. Oh I forgot to say that I have been doing this so long she doesn’t even care that it is there. Occasionally if I do pig tails she will take one down but otherwise could really careless what I do to her hair!
