Slicing Fresh Peaches, Nectarines or Plums
Man, oh, man do I wish I lived in Georgia this time of year. I’d even settle for South Carolina just to have some of that yummy fresh southern peach goodness. I’m finding decent varieties of peaches and nectarines at our local stores, as long as I can keep them from getting smashed on the way home (grr…), but nothing compares to a fresh Georgia peach.
I know that these are pretty simple fruits to slice up, but I do mine a little bit differently, so I wanted to share my secret with you. The classic way to do them is just to cut them in half all the way around the pit and then gently twist them apart and cut your slices from there.
However, I prefer to cut them in half and then continue cutting my slices while the fruit is still attached to the pit. There’s a couple reasons I do it this way. For one, it’s much easier for me to cut all of my slices almost exactly the same size. Also, if I’m having a tough time getting it to separate from the pit, I don’t end up with an entirely squished half. Once I get that first slice off, it’s fairly easy to work my way around the rest of the fruit.
Another reason, which is a little bit silly, is I’m a sucker for anything that saves me a step, and doing it this way also means that I’m not setting down my knife and then half of the peach and then picking them back up in turn. I simply make my cuts all at one time and then separate the fruit all at one time.

I cut my peaches the exact same way! Great minds think alike….
The peaches look delicious! Thanks for sharing.

What a great idea - I would have not thought of it…time saving always helps
Great tip! Works for avocados, too! (Do the peels when you have them in quarters.)
Here’s a tip….BR/BR/To remove the skin from the peach really easily….BR/BR/Place the peaches in boiling water for a couple of minutes until the skin becomes loose. Remove them and place in ice water to briefly cool. The skins will just peel off with your fingers very easily.BR/BR/Angie Foreman
Hello - Just visiting from OhAmanda … I had to see who the “other Mandi” was:) Living in GA, I should know how to cut a peach, but your tips are new to me … can’t wait to try it your way!!!
I have to respectfully disagree on your choice of peach. I prefer Colorado peaches.
